The updated version of ISO 14001:2026 was published in September.
Unlike the fundamental changes made to ISO 14001 in 2015, the ISO 14001:2026 changes are evolutionary and incorporate the 2024 climate-change amendment. That’s not to say the changes are unimportant, your environmental management system will need reviewing and updating.
We have worked closely with certification bodies to understand what those changes are and what evidence they are going to use to assess compliance.
Overview
The 2026 changes are not as fundamental as those made in 2015. However, there are some important new concepts and requirements that will need some thought. As with the changes to ISO 9001, the bulk of the changes are clarification, rather than new requirements, but there are some significant new requirements.
The climate change amendment introduced in 2024 (ref. ISO 14001:2015/Amd1:2024) is now included in the standard. However, in addition to climate change, also other environmental perspectives are added for consideration, such as use of natural resources, pollution levels, ecosystem health and biological diversity. These amendments maintains the holistic environmental focus.
Your system scope must consider your authority and ability to exercise control and influence over the life cycle of activities, products and services.
This is a meaningful tightening, especially for partial scopes and multi-site organisations.
2026 Annex A additionally stresses:
- reliance on corporate/regional entities for support functions should be considered
- scope must not exclude significant aspects or evade obligations
- scope should not exclude relevant operations or locations
Existing systems may be retained, but will need to demonstrate clearer linkage, improved life cycle consideration, and more robust justification of scope and obligations.
Episode will review this with you ad hoc. Typically most of our clients’ scopes already meet the bullet points above.
The notes have been expanded to include preservation or conservation of natural resources as well as the 2015 notes. Whilst not mandatory, it is sensible to update the policy in line with the notes.
For a no-obligation, free half-day session where we will talk you through the ISO9001:2026 changes, review your current management system & make recommendations for changes. We are happy to meet onsite or have an online meeting, whatever suits you best.
Clause 6.1.1, general (planning) has been streamlined to focus on establishing processes for Clauses 6.1.2 to 6.1.5 and ensuring documented information is available to demonstrate those processes are carried out as planned. The detailed requirements for aspects, compliance obligations, risks and opportunities, and planning actions are now addressed within the subsequent subclauses.
A new clause (6.1.5) has been added to emphasise the need to consider the strategic risks & opportunities explicitly.
Annex A provides expanded guidance on:
A new note is included to explain the concept of lifecycle perspective.
Annex a guidance has been expanded quite a bit.
Organisations will need to review and, where necessary, enhance their environmental aspect identification process to ensure it reflects the broader and more explicit expectations of ISO 14001:2026. This includes demonstrating consideration of normal and abnormal operating conditions, change, and potential emergency situations, as well as strengthening lifecycle thinking. Aspect registers may need to be expanded to include a wider range of activities, including areas such as land use, decommissioning, and broader environmental conditions, with clearer criteria for determining significance.
Lifecyle considerations have become increasingly explored by auditors. We will discuss this with clients ad hoc – in many cases we have already addressed the need.
Change management is dealt with in a number of clauses such as aspects & impacts, operational control, etc. but in line with other ISO standards more explicit & documented change management is being called for.
2026: introduces Clause 6.3 Planning of changes as an explicit requirement:
"changes affecting or capable of affecting the EMS must be carried out in a planned manner. Changes must be managed to ensure outcomes."
Episode will review this with you ad hoc. We have seen auditors raise change management often recently.
We have a change management procedure which has been welcomed by auditors, but Episode's philosophy is “if in doubt, leave it out” as we try to keep systems as simple as possible. In this case, it seems wise to implement a procedure.
The focus has been extended from the control of “outsourced processes” to control of “externally provided processes, products and services”.
2026 Annex A expands examples of controls on external providers:
Episode will explore this with clients ad hoc. If you have ISO 9001 it is likely sufficient controls are in place if the system was developed by us.
Substantively the same, but 2026 changes documentation wording to “process(es) shall be available as documented information”.
No substantive change;
Requirements split into
9.3.1 (general),
9.3.2 (inputs), and
9.3.3 (results),
The aim is to improve clarity and auditability.

Roger's support was invaluable in terms of gap analysis, recommendations for improvement, and facilitation of the certification process. I would strongly recommend Roger to any organisation wishing to develop or improve its management systems, in a way which minimizes bureaucracy, and focuses on best serving the needs of the organization.
Gary Evans, Flour Corporation, Abu Dhabi
Roger and Sandy at Episode were great in helping us achieve not only one but two ISO standards 9001:2015 and 14001:2015. Episode were extremely helpful from the onset, they were able to break down the ISO standard so they were easily comprehensible and well applied to our business in a sustainable manner. They are a company that offers a guaranteed certification at the end of the process and they delivered it. I believe that the work completed during this process was key to us having won the Leeds Bid contract.
Harvey Mills, Managing Director, Forge Recycling, Leeds.
If Sandy hasn’t already updated you we are delighted to say we passed the transition audit for ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. Sandy did an absolutely fab job and all credit to her, we have loved having both of you here it’s been a pleasure.
I have had a brief chat with Morgan[the CEO] about the next steps and how we manage things going forwards. Morgan will be in touch with you soon about this and getting Episode/Sandy back in on a regular basis. Once again many thanks for everything and especially to Sandy!!
Morag Tearne, HR and Health & Safety Manager, H. Slingsby plc, Shipley
Episode is always prepared to go the extra mile. When in a tight spot the lead consultant carried out an audit for us at very short notice (on a Sunday afternoon) to keep us on track. What is important to us is the advice they give us is practical and tailored to us. The quality of output Episode produces is very high.
This has resulted in us having a multi-year managed service from Episode so as a company we know our ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 integrated system is up to date and working for us.
Gareth Walters, Financial Controller, Sports Turf Research Institute, Bingley.
When asked by Episode what three things they do well, and what three things they could improve upon, my answers were:
Done well
1. Client Communication, responded to queries very quickly
2. Requirements of the standard were communicated in a simple manner.
3. Assistance from initial implementation to date of assessment was very good.
I can honestly there is nothing I feel they should improve upon.
Paul Hunneybell, Operations Manager, Fenland Fire Contracts Limited, Luton
The consultant worked with the team in Scott Bader Middle East Ltd. to completely re-engineer our Integrated Management System incorporating ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. Until then we were slaves to the ISO audits, with the systems not adding much value beyond certification. Now we have a business management system that really works for us and is truly integrated into our operations. We were also successfully re-certified along the way.
John Kemp, CEO Scott Bader Middle East, Africa and Asia
The consultant really focused on making our systems and processes work better for us, not just help us comply with ISO 9001. He was able to work with Department Heads and Senior Management to shape their strategic thinking about quality and business objectives without telling them what they had to do because the standard says so.
