ISO 37001 gives the requirements and guidance for establishing, implementing,
maintaining and improving an anti-bribery management system.
What do I need to know about
ISO 37001, anti-bribery management and the Bribery Act?
Adopting ISO 37001 covers bribery in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors, including bribery by and against your organisation or your staff, and bribes paid or received through or by a third party.
Whenever the Serious Fraud Office investigates, the first question will always be “what was done to try to prevent this happening?”. Adopting ISO 37001 should significantly reduce the likelihood of an offence being committed in the first place, but if the worst happens it puts you in a far stronger position.
The penalties under the UK’s Bribery Act are severe – there is a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine for individuals. Corporates face an unlimited fine (including in respect of the corporate offence). In addition, they face automatic and perpetual debarment from tendering for EU public contracts.
The World Bank estimates that over £1 trillion is paid in bribes each year, with disastrous impacts such as eroding political stability, increasing the cost of business, and contributing to poverty. It can have devastating effects on your organisation, including the possibility of unlimited fines and even imprisonment. Ignorance is no defence.

Implementing
We will:
- Establish a detailed project plan in our online project management platform (and stick to it)
- Complete a gap analysis between what the standard requires and what you have/do already
- Conduct a detailed anti-bribery risk assessment audit and agree how each risk is to be dealt with
(the “risk treatment plan”) - Agree mechanism for suitable staff awareness training (a mandatory requirement)
- Implement the system
- Submit the system to Episode Head Office for final QC checks
- We submit it to you for your final approval
- Separate consultant Internally audits the system
- Carry out a management review
Certification
We will:
- Work with you to select and appoint a UKAS accredited certification body.
- Be onsite throughout the certification process
- Address any issues that arise during the audit
- Brief you on post-certification activity
a. 3 year cycle of annual surveillance audits and
b. what you need to do throughout the year to maintain the system - Agree where the finished, certified system should be housed
